It is the part of the city with the large Queen Anne and Tudor houses, the NJ Transit station, and a tight kosher retail strip along the 200 block of Main Avenue. It is also home to a large and long-established Orthodox Jewish community — reporting from 2006 already counted more than 1,300 families, and the city today has more than twenty yeshivas and other Jewish educational institutions, including Yeshiva Gedola on Ascension Street and Yeshiva Ktana on Main Avenue.

That points squarely at three-row SUVs and minivans rather than compact crossovers. A seven-seat vehicle used properly is the difference between one trip and two, and in a neighbourhood built around walkable institutions and short drives, the trips add up fast.

The station is a genuine park-and-ride

NJ Transit’s Passaic station sits in Passaic Park at Passaic Avenue and Van Houten Avenue with Lackawanna Place, on the Main Line into Hoboken with connections to Penn Station New York via Secaucus Junction. It has parking lots on both sides of the tracks. That is unusual and useful: it means a household can run a smaller, cheaper commuter car that lives at the station most of the day, alongside the family vehicle.

Buses 151, 161 and 190 run to the Port Authority Bus Terminal, with the Passaic Bus Terminal on Main Avenue downtown. Route 21 serves the city directly, with Route 3, the Garden State Parkway and I-80 all close by. Mean travel time to work in Passaic is about 25 minutes — shorter than most of Bergen County, which tells you a lot of people here work locally.

Short trips, tight streets, older housing

Passaic is the seventh densest municipality in New Jersey at over 22,500 people per square mile. The kosher retail cluster on Main Avenue runs roughly three blocks, from about number 200 to number 251, so a lot of daily driving is measured in minutes rather than miles. Short-trip driving is hard on a car — it is the pattern that kills batteries and never gets the engine properly warm — so a documented service history matters more here than the odometer reading does. St. Mary’s General Hospital on Boulevard is the neighbourhood’s large local employer, and hospitals run shifts, which means early starts and reliable cold-weather starting.

What to look at, by body style

Three-row family SUVs

The centre of gravity for this neighbourhood. A Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer or Kia Sorento seats seven, tows a small trailer, and copes with the school-and-shopping pattern that defines a week here. Expect roughly $22,000 to $42,000 depending on model, year and trim. If you are carrying a full house regularly, do not compromise down to a five-seater and hope.

Minivans

Underrated and, for a genuinely large family, better than an SUV in almost every way that matters: sliding doors that will not ding the car next to you in a tight lot, a flat floor, and the easiest third row to actually get into. If your requirement is eight seats and school runs, this is the honest answer even if it is not the fashionable one.

Compact crossovers

The right second car. A CR-V, RAV4, Rogue or CX-5 handles the station run, the local errands and the winter, at a fraction of the running cost of the big vehicle. All-wheel drive typically adds $1,500 to $2,500 over the front-drive version.

Sedans

If the family vehicle is already covered, a used Civic, Accord, Camry or Altima at roughly $14,000 to $22,000 is the cheapest reliable way to add a second car — particularly one that will sit in the station lot five days a week.

From Passaic Park to Carz4Us of South Hackensack

About 6.2 miles. Route 46 west out of South Hackensack, off onto Main Street through Lodi, then Memorial Drive and Passaic Street across the Passaic Street bridge into Passaic Avenue — roughly twelve minutes with clear roads, longer when Route 46 is busy.

From Passaic Park to Carz4Us of Pine Brook

About 14 miles west, roughly twenty minutes via Route 46 east and Paulison Avenue. This is a notably cleaner run than the drive to South Hackensack, so if the vehicle you want is at Pine Brook the detour costs less than you would expect.

Sunday hours

Both lots are closed on Sundays. Bergen County, where both are located, is the only New Jersey county that still enforces blue laws restricting Sunday retail. Weekday evenings are the quietest time to visit; Saturday is busy.
