Why buy a used car in Palisades Park

The overnight parking permit has a weight limit, and it will decide your car

This is the detail most buyers find out too late. Palisades Park requires a residential permit to park overnight on most borough streets — midnight to 9:00 a.m., Sunday through Friday, excluding holidays. Some streets are exempt, including Bergen Boulevard, Grand Avenue, Fairview Street, Union Street and Fair Street, plus parts of Commercial, Columbia, Ruby, Palisades and Edsall Avenues. To get a permit you need a New Jersey licence showing borough residency, two proofs of residency, your registration and insurance card — and the vehicle’s gross weight must not exceed 2.5 tons.

That last clause matters. A heavy full-size pickup or a large van can fall outside it, which means no overnight street permit. If your only parking is on the street, the weight limit is not a detail, it is the constraint. Confirm the current ordinance and the current threshold with the borough before you buy anything large.

Duplex parking is generous on paper and tight in practice

Palisades Park is the third densest of Bergen County’s 70 municipalities, at roughly 16,400 people per square mile, and its housing is unusual: the borough has allowed one- and two-unit homes on 5,000 square foot lots since its 1939 zoning ordinance, and by 2018 side-by-side duplexes made up an estimated 55% of the one-to-four-unit housing stock, against only 21% single-family detached. Since the 1990s, each duplex has had to provide four garage spaces and four driveway spaces — eight in total.

Eight spaces sounds like plenty until you see the layout. They are split between two households and typically arranged in tandem, so a long vehicle in the back of a driveway boxes in the one behind it. Mid-size is the sweet spot here. Wider, longer vehicles create daily friction between neighbours.

No rail, and the bridge is right there

There is no rail station in Palisades Park. NJ Transit buses 127, 154, 155, 157, 166 and 168 run to the Port Authority Bus Terminal, the 83 goes to Jersey City, and Rockland Coaches routes also serve Midtown. For anything else, Manhattan is over the George Washington Bridge via Fort Lee, and the mean commute is about 31 minutes. Roughly two-thirds of borough households rent, and median household income is about $95,000 — this is a market where a well-chosen used car makes far more sense than a new one.

What to look at, by body style

Compact crossovers

The right answer for most Palisades Park households. A CR-V, RAV4, Rogue, CX-5 or Tucson-sized vehicle fits a tandem duplex driveway, clears the weight threshold for an overnight permit comfortably, and still carries what a Broad Avenue grocery run demands. All-wheel drive typically adds $1,500 to $2,500 over the front-drive equivalent.

Sedans

Genuinely the easiest cars to live with here. Palisades Park’s average household is 2.71 people — below the New Jersey norm — and if you are commuting by bus most days, a used Civic, Accord, Camry or Altima at roughly $14,000 to $22,000 covers everything else. Short, light, easy to park in tandem, and no permit weight worries at all.

Three-row family SUVs

A minority need in a borough with 2.71 people per household on average, but not a rare one, and multi-generational households do exist here in numbers. A Pilot, Highlander, Explorer or Sorento works — check your driveway depth first, because a three-row SUV parked in tandem is the vehicle nobody can get past.

Trucks and pickups

Check the 2.5-ton overnight permit threshold before you do anything else. A mid-size pickup is usually the practical ceiling for a resident who parks on the street. If you have garage space, you have more freedom — but the duplex garages here were not built for full-size trucks.

Why we are closed on Sundays

Bergen County is the only county in New Jersey that still enforces blue laws restricting Sunday retail, and Palisades Park sits inside it. Both our lots close Sundays. Weekday evenings are the quietest time to visit.
