Why buy a used car in East Hill

You live at the top of a 350-foot climb

Our lot in South Hackensack sits at about 7 feet above sea level. Downtown Englewood is around 16 feet. Mid-way up East Hill, near East Palisade Avenue, you are at roughly 211 feet, and by the Englewood Cliffs line it is about 362 feet. The City of Englewood puts the maximum elevation of the Palisades to its east at 410 feet, descending to a city centre barely above sea level.

That is a 350-foot-plus climb inside roughly a mile, on roads that ice before the valley does and clear after it. It is the single strongest argument for all-wheel drive anywhere in our service area. AWD typically adds $1,500 to $2,500 over a comparable front-drive vehicle in our used inventory, and on East Hill it is the least controversial money you will spend on a car.

Off-street parking, and what that frees you to buy

On large lots with driveways and garages, the constraints that dominate car choice in denser parts of Bergen County — narrow driveways, permit parking, snow emergency routes — mostly do not apply. That opens the door to three-row SUVs and larger vehicles that would be a daily nuisance ten minutes down the hill. It also means a second vehicle is practical, which is why we see a lot of East Hill households running one larger family car alongside something smaller for the commute.

Where East Hill drives to

Englewood Cliffs, immediately uphill, hosts CNBC’s world headquarters, LG Electronics’ North American headquarters in a 352,000-square-foot facility opened in 2018, and Unilever’s American headquarters. Englewood itself supports roughly 14,500 jobs across some 250 retail establishments, 500-plus professional firms and 110 industrial establishments. Dwight-Englewood School sits on a 45-acre campus on East Palisade Avenue, Elisabeth Morrow is on Lydecker Street, and Englewood Health is on Engle Street.

There is no passenger rail in Englewood — passenger service on the Northern Branch ended in 1966, and the proposed light rail extension is still proposed. NJ Transit’s 166 runs local and express to the Port Authority; the 171, 175, 178 and 186 serve the George Washington Bridge Bus Station, which the city notes is about five miles from its centre. Mean travel time to work in Englewood is about 31 minutes.

What to look at, by body style

All-wheel-drive SUVs and crossovers

The default East Hill purchase, and rightly so. A BMW X3 or X5, Lexus RX, Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V or Mazda CX-5 with all-wheel drive handles the climb in weather without drama. We carry BMW and Lexus alongside the mainstream brands, which is unusual for an independent lot and useful if you want to cross-shop an X3 against an RX against a Highlander in one visit.

Three-row family SUVs

Large lots mean you can actually park one. A Pilot, Highlander, Explorer, Sorento or X5 covers the school run to Dwight-Englewood or Elisabeth Morrow, plus the airport, plus visiting family. Expect roughly $22,000 to $42,000 depending on model, year and trim. Get all-wheel drive.

Sedans and coupes

The second car in a two-car East Hill household is very often a sedan — the one that goes over the George Washington Bridge or down to Englewood Cliffs every day while the SUV stays for family duty. A used Accord, Camry, BMW 3 Series or Lexus ES fills that role well. A used 3 Series or ES gives you the badge and the ride quality at a fraction of new money.

Trucks and pickups

Less common on East Hill than elsewhere in our area, but the space is there if you want one. Full-size pickups are genuinely usable here in a way they are not in Palisades Park or Cedar Lane, because you have somewhere to put them.

Distance and directions

About 7.25 miles. The routing is Route 46 east, onto I-80 east, then the local roadway of I-95 and off into Englewood via Broad Avenue — roughly 13 minutes with clear roads, longer at peak because that interchange carries a lot of traffic. Plenty of local drivers prefer Route 4 west and Grand Avenue instead; both work.

Why we are closed on Sundays

Bergen County is the only county in New Jersey that still enforces blue laws restricting Sunday retail. Both lots close Sundays. Weekday evenings are the calmest time to visit.
